Your Namesake: Monsignor Patrick R. Dunigan
Monsignor Patrick R. Dunigan, a Pastor at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Flint, was a Chaplain in the Michigan National Guard since 1907. He served in the 126 Infantry, 32nd Division during World War I and was highly decorated. At the time of his Honorable Discharge from service, he held the rank of Major. French military decorations followed him in substantial number. General Order No.15 of 1923, awarded him the American Distinguished Service Cross. That citation reads; “While performing his duties as Chaplain, he repeatedly displayed exceptional qualities of personal courage and heroism in attendance upon the wounded and dying, going amongst the most advanced points of the firing line, to the several dressing stations, crossing and re-crossing the lowlands of the Oureq River, which was under intense artillery and machine gun fire; again crossing and recrossing them, when the entire valley was drenched with gas, and against the protest of officers who warned him that he was doing so at the imminent risk of his own life. After having been gassed while performing these errands of mercy, and tagged for evacuation, he refused to be evacuated and persisted in carrying his missions of mercy to the wounded and the dying, thereby enhancing the morale of the troops in his fearless disregard for personal danger and contributed materially to the success of the capture of the heights beyond the Oureq River and the advance to the Veslie River at Fismes, France.” The afore mention citation quoted here in full, endeavors to trace his tours of duty, July 31 and August 1-4, 1918 as the Red Arrow men headed for Fismes, France. Being mindful that it was men such as Monsignor Dunigan, that we have elected to “Celebrate in Memoria” those who fought for America in this Great War. He also became on of the first of two Chaplains within the Michigan Department of State Police. BIRTH: Emmett, St. Clair County, Michigan, USA. DEATH: 24 Feb 1934 (aged 63)Michigan, USA.
